Yakima Valley farmworkers who can afford it travel back to Mexico in
December for the holidays. In Pajacuarán, it's a time for the men-only
ritual of horse racing on a Sunday afternoon. Bareback and barefoot, riders
bullet their mounts down a dusty farm lane in heats of two. The races begin
when enough men show up to bet a purse worth winning. They end when the last
cold beer is sold from the back of a pickup parked in deep shade.
