Subsistence farming is a way of life for many in Pajacuarán, a town of 20,000 in rural Michoacán, Mexico. Ascención Cruz Barragán, 66, gleans a corn field in Pajacuarán to make feed for his cattle. While he gathered stalks, two of his 12 children joined him in the field at dawn to load stalks into a chopper and the silage into sacks.
