Sally Van Over displays the flag that covered her father's coffin once a year, on Independence Day. She broke that tradition Wednesday morning when she unfurled it over the balcony at her home near Madison Park.
"I am deeply disturbed," said Van Over, 54. "I was up at 6 o'clock (Tuesday), so I followed (the news) all day long until I couldn't bear it any longer."
Is the flag a sign of her patriotism? "I'm not a chauvinist, and to me, patriotism is chauvinism."
For her, the tragedy recalls the sadness she felt at the death of her brother last October. She hangs her flag to honor both him and her father.
