  In a horrific sequence of destruction, terrorists crashed two planes into the World Trade Center on Tuesday morning, and the twin 110-story towers collapsed hours later. Explosions also rocked the Pentagon and spread fear across the nation.

  As New Yorkers, and then the world, watched, the World Trade Center billowed smoke and flames before first the south tower, then the north tower collapsed into rubble. Smoke and fire also continued to erupt from the damaged Pentagon building into Tuesday night. Officials believe fatalities to be in the thousands.
