1856 This map of Pioneer Square, originally drawn during the one-day "Battle of Seattle" between white settlers and Indians in 1856, shows the original lay of the land, a cluster of buildings on a narrow point, separated from the mainland by tidal flats. The names - Denny, Boren, Bell, etc. - designate the founders' land claims. A notation on the edge of the settlement reads: "Hills and woods thronged with Indians." The overlay of dotted lines shows the street grid that developed later in the century.
