Story

Accused by Barbara Hartle, left, of Communist activities, dozens of local "witnesses" appeared before U.S. Rep. Harold Velde and the 1954 House Un-American Activities Committee hearings in Seattle. Photo Credit: Seattle Times.
Above are just six "witnesses". From left to right: Margaret Irving, Gordon Freeman Moir, Del Castle, Philip L. Ceis, Laura Wilkins, Stanley Henrickson. Moir and Castle wore "Joe Must Go" buttons, referring to U.S. Sen. Joseph McCarthy. Ceis was a building contractor from West Seattle. Henrickson was a laborer who could not afford an attorney. Irving and Wilkins, among many others, invoked the protection of the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Photo Credit: Seattle Times.
