In the summer of 1897, the news pages of The Seattle Times exploded with photos, maps and tales of the "far-famed Klondyke," full of "enough gold to almost startle the world." Advertisers joined the frenzy, offering everything from crystallized eggs ("simply fresh with the water expelled") to protective gear, "never out of shape."
