Indian Images Altered Photo Tour

BACKSTART

Story

Seattle photographer Edward Curtis focused much of his career on documenting Indian life. The Sunday Seattle Times often featured full pages of his pictures. By posing his subjects, Curtis frequently portrayed Indian culture as it had been, not as it was in his time. Curtis provided the wig and bearskin worn by the Makah whaler when he took the 1915 picture seen in the related story.
