Seahawks honors: Seattle Times readers, writers vote
We asked readers online to name their offensive and defensive players of the year, their MVP, the play of the year, and the individual performance of the year. Then we compared those to what Times staff reporters Bob Condotta and Jayson Jenks thought.
We asked readers online to name their offensive and defensive players of the year, their MVP, the play of the year, and the individual performance of the year. Then we compared those to what Times staff reporters Bob Condotta and Jayson Jenks thought.
Play of the year
Readers: Richard Sherman tip, Malcolm Smith interception vs. 49ers, 74.3 percent. Only other play getting at least 10 percent of the vote was Sherman’s pick six at Houston, which received 12.5 percent.
Condotta: Sherman tip, Smith interception. The play ranks as not only potentially the biggest in Seahawks history, but in all of Seattle sports.
Jenks: Russell Wilson’s touchdown pass to Jermaine Kearse in the NFC Championship Game. Perfect throw, difficult catch and huge moment.
Offensive player of the year
Readers: Marshawn Lynch was the easy winner, with 69.2 percent of the vote. Wilson was second, 20.7 percent.
Condotta: Wilson. The Seahawks quarterback finished with a team record 101.2 passer rating despite a so-called late-season“slump.’’ And what can’t be quantified by any number is all the times Wilson used his legs to keep plays, and his offense, alive.
Jenks: Wilson. Lynch is the heart of Seattle’s offense, but Wilson kept the pulse beating when the offensive line had injuries and struggled early in the season.
Defensive player of the year
Readers: Earl Thomas, with 63.4 percent. Sherman was second, 24.8 percent.
Condotta: Sherman. Safeties Thomas and Kam Chancellor would have been good choices, too. But for the sheer magnitude of the plays he made, I’ll go with Sherman.
Jenks: Thomas. He made enough big plays to warrant this spot, be he also gets the nod for the way he steered the defense as a leader this season.
MVP
Readers: Thomas wins a close one, at 36.1 percent. Lynch received 30 percent of the vote, Wilson 19.9 percent, Sherman 13 percent.
Condotta: Wilson. Quarterback is the most important position in the game, and Wilson usually came up big when it mattered most. Wilson threw just three interceptions in the last nine games of the season, including playoffs, one of which was on a desperation heave at San Francisco.
Jenks: Thomas and Sherman. The defense got the Seahawks to the Super Bowl, and no one had better seasons than Thomas and Sherman.
Individual performance of the year
Readers: Doug Baldwin’s game vs. the 49ers in the NFC Championship game received 47.3 percent of the vote. Lynch’s playoff game effort against the Saints got 38.9 percent.
Condotta: Wilson vs. the Saints during the regular season. Wilson turned in his best game of the year to lead the Seahawks past Drew Brees and the Saints,34-7, in a Monday Night game. Wilson was 22 of 30 for 310 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.
Jenks: Lynch vs. New Orleans in the playoffs. Wilson and the passing game really struggled with the weather conditions. Lynch responded by taking over: 140 yards, two touchdowns and a season-high 28 carries.
