Scientist Ian Miller conducts a survey of the beach near the mouth of the Elwha River in May 2011. He was compiling baseline data on the size, composition and movement of cobble and sediment there. Once the dams come out, the river will restart the transport of sediment from the mountains all the way to the sea. Scientists will be watching to see if that helps rebuild beaches that today are starved for sand and other fine material.
