These painted and numbered rocks were drilled with holes, and microchips were placed inside. The rocks are being tossed overboard into the Elwha River, where scientists will track their movement, using scanners. The "smart rocks" are intended to help scientists learn how cobble moves in the river, an important part of how the Elwha will change after two dams are taken out.
