Larry Stone's thumbs up, thumbs down
Weekly MLB likes and dislikes
Thumbs up
Bobby Abreu, Angels: His 500th career double put him in rarefied company. Abreu joins Barry Bonds, Rickey Henderson and Craig Biggio as the only players in history with 2,000 hits, 500 doubles, 250 homers and 350 stolen bases.
Thumbs down
Brian Bannister, Royals: He has the dubious distinction of allowing at least one homer in nine straight games — but the footnote is that Bannister has won four in a row.
Ex-Mariner of the week
Ken Griffey Jr: Yes, he's officially an ex-Mariner now, at least from a playing capacity. We will never see his likes again — unless, perhaps, one of his sons or nephews pursues a baseball career. Happy retirement, Junior.
Quote
"Patience is a virtue, right? Too much patience is stupidity." — Cubs manager Lou Piniella before a game in which he benched five struggling regulars — and lost anyway, 3-2, to the Pirates.
