No. 10 UW softball falls to Oregon State on the road, 3-2
Also: Husky baseball team beats St. Mary’s behind two-run home run by Chris Baker, Western Washington senior Jordan Walley hits a pair of homers in sweep over Saint Martin’s and other regional notes.
Despite giving up just four hits in the game, the No. 10-ranked University of Washington softball team fell to Oregon State, 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at OSU Softball Complex. Among the four hits were a pair of solo home runs by the Beavers, who claimed game two of the three-game set.
Junior Casey Stangel (6-3) took the loss, allowing three hits and three runs in three innings for UW (29-10, 10-7 Pac-12). Sophomore Madi Schreyer entered the game in the fourth and tossed the final three frames, giving up just one hit and one walk.
The Husky bats collected just six hits through seven innings.
Freshman Tannon Snow went 2 for 3, hitting her fourth home run of the season to tie the game in the second inning. Sophomore Trysten Melhart also went 2 for 3 with a double while sophomore Taylor Van Zee recorded an RBI double.
Washington and Oregon State (27-15-1, 6-11) will play the series finale Sunday at 3 p.m. The game will air live on Pac-12 Networks.
College Softball
• Seattle University softball (15-30, 1-11 WAC) tied the game early and attempted a late comeback but errors proved costly as University of Missouri, Kansas City earned a 6-4 win in the series finale.
• Senior first baseman Jordan Walley capped her collegiate career with a pair of Senior Day home runs as Western Washington swept a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader against Saint Martin’s. The Vikings won the opener 4-3 behind a Walley grand slam, then claimed a 7-1 triumph in the nightcap, concluding the season 26-21 overall.
• Central Washington split a pair of games in a doubleheader against Simon Fraser, 6-7, 19-1, in British Columbia. Kailyn Campbell totaled five RBI for the Wildcats (34-13, 18-10 GNAC).
College Baseball
• Washington scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back as the Huskies beat St. Mary’s, 6-1, in the second game of a doubleheader sweep at Husky Ballpark. The Huskies’ (21-14) pitching staff allowed just two runs total to St. Mary’s (22-14) in the two games. Chris Baker hit a two-run home run in the second inning that ended up holding up as Husky freshman pitcher Joe DeMers kept St. Mary’s at bay in the first game, 3-1.
• Washington State dropped a 6-2 decision in the second game of its Pac-12 Conference series with USC at Bailey-Brayton Field. The Cougars fell to 12-23 overall and 5-12 in conference play. WSU’s Trek Stemp singled home a run in the ninth to extend his hitting streak to nine games and his on-base streak to 10 straight games.
• The Central Washington University baseball team split its Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader against Saint Martin’s University. The Wildcats are now 21-18 overall and 11-28 in GNAC games. In game one, the Wildcats’ offense posted eight runs on 14 hits.
College Tennis
• The doubles team of Nour Abbes and Miki Kobayashi fell at the Pac-12 Championships in a 6-4 loss to Melissa Lord and Carol Zhao of Stanford in the semifinal round. Currently ranked 34th in the country, Abbes and Kobayashi had beaten two tough opponents to reach the semifinals, including the No. 5 doubles pair of Taylor Davidson and Caroline Doyle from Stanford.
• Seattle University men’s tennis swept all three doubles matches and finished with six straight singles wins en route to a 7-0 victory vs. Linfield.
College Track & Field
• For just the second time in school history, the Husky track and field team scored a dual-meet sweep over Washington State on the Cougars’ home track.
college Rowing
• The Seattle Pacific novice four women’s crew finished a distant third at the Viking Regatta in the regular-season finale in choppy conditions on Lake Samish.
