Huskies baseball rallies past UCLA

Julia DePonte’s single in the fourth inning and relentless defense lifted No. 9 Washington (28-8, 9-5 Pac-12) to its seventh consecutive victory, 2-1 over California (20-17-1, 5-5-1) in front of a sellout crowd at Husky Softball Stadium.
Washington starter Taran Alvelo came away victorious, throwing 61/3 innings, allowing six hits while striking out seven.
DePonte went 3 for 3 with a run batted in. Trysten Melhart went 2 for 4 with a run scored, while Kimberlee Souza had a hit and an RBI.
Washington State held its second scrimmage of the spring, accounting for nearly 100 plays at Martin Stadium. The Cougars offense scored 10 touchdowns, six through the air and four on the ground, while the defense had six sacks, two interceptions and seven pass breakups while forcing one fumble.
Quarterback Luke Falk went 13 of 17 for 191 yards, one interception and two touchdowns, including a 36-yard connection with Gabe Marks for the second score of the day. Tavares Martin Jr. led the receivers with seven catches for 58 yards and two touchdowns.
Baseball
Left-hander Scotty Sunitsch pitched 42/3 scoreless innings of relief and the Washington State offense came alive to clinch the series with an 8-3 victory against No. 10 Oregon State at Bailey-Brayton Field.
Trek Stemp had four hits, drove in two runs and scored twice to lead the Cougars (12-20, 5-10 Pac-12) to their first series win over the Beavers (23-9, 6-6) since 2010 and first series win over a top-10 team since 2012 at No. 6 Oregon.
Weston Hatten scored three times, Dugan Shirer had three hits and Stefan Van Horn added two hits and drove in two runs.
• Seattle University (22-11, 10-1 Western Athletic Conference) remained in first place with a 4-1 victory over Grand Canyon (15-18, 4-7) at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue.
Sheldon Stober homered for the Redhawks. Jeffrey Morgan and Dalton Hurd each had two hits and an RBI.
• Jace Vanderbrake had four hits and six RBI as Gonzaga (21-11, 10-4 West Coast Conference) defeated host San Francisco 10-2. Vanderbrake hit two homers, including a grand slam.
Softball
Seattle U (15-26, 1-8 WAC) lost two 3-2 games at Cal State Bakersfield.
Beach volleyball
Washington (3-1) beat Oregon 3-2 in its first ever home match, played at Alki Beach. The teams of Crissy Jones and Tia Scambray, Cassie Strickland and Courtney Schwan, and Destiny Julye and Lindsay Chalmers each won their match.
Men’s tennis
Host Washington (16-8, 3-4 Pac-12) lost 4-2 against Oregon. Mitch Stewart and Sebastian Hawken won singles matches for UW.
Women’s rowing
No. 14 Washington State’s varsity eight (6:48.2) finished second to No. 3 Virginia (6:43.1) in the morning session at the Clemson Invitational in South Carolina. In the afternoon session, WSU (6:33.4) was second to No. 10 Michigan (6:28.8).
Track and field
Jalen Tims broke the Seattle Pacific record for the women’s 400 hurdles with a time of 1:00.06 at the Beach Invitational in Long Beach, Calif.
