Distance: Mileage calculations (between 93 and 95 miles) vary among guidebook authors and mapmakers.

Total trail mileage within park: More than 300 miles

Estimated number of 1999 Wonderland Trail thru-hikers: 240 (typical year: 300-plus).

1999 trail maintenance budget: $500,000 (including money from park's fee demonstration program).

National Park Service trail-crew members, 1999: 26, divided up between five groups assigned to one of park's four quadrants, plus another for the Paradise area.

Only at Rainier: The park is regarded both wilderness land and a National Historical Landmark, requiring park stewards to maintain park elements, including trails, to reflect its historical design and constitution.
