Seattle schools Superintendent John Stanford yesterday sent his staff and teachers an upbeat end-of-the-year message from his room at Virginia Mason Medical Center. Here's the text of his e-mail letter:
"Now that I have been back in the hospital for over a week undergoing a second round of chemotherapy for leukemia, I want you to know that my resolve to fight this illness remains undiminished. I must tell you that as I continue to fight, the cards, messages and letters I am receiving from you and your students are making an incredible difference. You continue to have my deepest and most heartfelt appreciation for all of your thoughts, prayers and love.
"To teachers: I am particularly grateful to you and proud of what you do, and I want you to know that you deserve to be exalted by this city for your remarkable work on behalf of children. You have my deepest appreciation for loving every child entrusted to your care . . . for increasing our children's academic achievement . . . and for creating excitement about public schools and for giving this city hope about public education. You are this society's heroes, and this city is profoundly in your debt.
"I hope you have an enjoyable and restful summer, and I look forward to working with you next year so that we can continue the momentum we have started for this city's children."
