While the U.S. economy hummed in the 1990s, it zoomed in our area. At the start of the decade, the median household in the Seattle metro area made $9,000 a year more than its counterpart nationwide. By 1998, the difference was $16,000, which, incidentally, is more than enough to cover the high cost of housing here. No wonder Seattleites spend a lot more than the rest of the country on fine restaurants,
vacations and ski equipment.
