Jobs grew faster than people
Return to "Service workers find jobs easily, yet low wages stay part of the deal"
Perhaps the most striking statistic of the Puget Sound economy is the jobs-to-population ratio, which has been shrinking for 30 years and shows no sign of reversing. In 1970, there was one job for every 2.6 men, women and children in King County; by last year, it was one job for every 1.5 people.
The typical family has gone from one income to two. Unemployment has been steadily dropping since 1992. And many workers have gone from part-time to full-time, or from one job to two. This may be the reason household incomes rose even while wages were relatively stagnant.
