Job growth at the extremes
Return to "Service workers find jobs easily, yet low wages stay part of the deal"
King County's economy churned out new jobs from 1990 to 1998 - more than 175,000 in all - and this analysis of state wage data suggests the hottest growth was at the top and bottom of the scale. Jobs paying less than $15 an hour and jobs paying more than $25 an hour grew nearly twice as fast as jobs in the middle. Overall, the under-$15-an-hour category accounted for 6 out of 10 new jobs.
