Leonardo Herrera saved up a season's wages to buy bricks to wall in his family's bathroom in Pajacuarán, Mexico. Growers are not supposed to hire workers they know are illegal, yet the industry estimates 70 percent of Washington's farmworkers are undocumented. Workers have the papers, growers inspect the papers, but all sides of the complicit economy say the process is a hoax. Some growers say the less they know about their workers' legal status the better. Others say they prefer to hire undocumented workers because they work harder and make few demands.
