Shrewdly, he opted to do it in the dead of summer, unlike the 1897 Klondikers whose sleds made the crossing in the chill of winter. Subzero temperatures, days of blizzards, and the sheer effort of hauling gear across mountainous terrain forced many early Klondikers to lose hope and go home. When finished with this part, Anderson will paddle his kayak the rest of the way. |
