A Kent man who has attempted to prove he was wrongly convicted of rape in March has been granted a one-week postponement on sentencing.

Steve Gary Titus, 31, was scheduled to appear for sentencing tomorrow before Superior Court Judge Charles V. Johnson. Judge Johnson delayed the sentencing to 9 a.m. June 8 at the request of Titus' lawyer, Jeff Jones.

One of several petitions pending before the court in Titus' behalf seeks a new trial on the basis of new evidence turned up since the jury found him guilty.

Jones said he will attempt to obtain affidavits from several Port of Seattle police officers, plus several expert witnesses, prior to the new sentencing date.

The victim was a 17-year-old girl who selected Titus' picture from a montage compiled by Port of Seattle police and identified him as the man who raped her in October.

Recent articles in The Times have detailed inconsistencies in the state's case against Titus.

Since the first article appeared May 15, The Times has received numerous calls and letters from citizens expressing concern over justice in the Titus case.
