Chief Leschi was from the Nisqually tribe, which was closely allied with the Duwamish. In 1855, he took part in "The Battle of Seattle." The Indians were driven off by cannons fired from the sloop Decatur, anchored in Elliott Bay, but two settlers were killed. Leschi was later hanged for the murder of an Army officer - a crime Leschi denied.
