Interactive: The tragic family tree of Thonglaw

Fifty years ago, Packy became the first elephant born in a U.S. zoo, captivating people far beyond Seattle, where he was conceived, and Portland, where he was born. Obscured has been the troubled family history of Packy and his father, Thonglaw. Following long-abandoned practice, the Oregon Zoo mated Thonglaw with his daughters and Packy to his sisters, risking damaged offspring. Of Thonglaw and Packy's 22 offspring, six are still alive.
