Sanctuary co-founder Ed Stewart tends to an African elephant at the California sanctuary, which began in 1984 with a jaguar,a menagerie of lions, bears, wolves and a 3-year-old African elephant called No. 71, which had been purchased at auction from a Florida wild-animal broker.
