The Elwha River slices through sediment built up behind Elwha Dam in this photo, taken in July 2011 as the reservoirs were being drawn down in preparation for dam removal. The 24 million cubic yards of sediment behind the dams are the reason it will take up to three years to remove the dams; managers are trying to control the amount of sediment released into the river.
