The Elwha: Travel a river being reborn

Conducting snorkel surveys on the river is hard, physical work, and just part of what it takes to get a picture of the baseline of the Elwha River before dam removal. Daniel Hernandez, photographed in August 2010, was part of an interagency team of scientists sampling the river to watch how it changes over time. Hernandez was counting and identifying each fish as he snorkeled along. A teammate standing on the bank recorded the data he shouted out.
