The Elwha Valley is home to more than 100 species of wildlife, including this Roosevelt elk, having a nice stretch after resting in a field near the river. Scientists from the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe have tagged some of the elk in order to track their movements and determine if there are changes after two dams are taken out of the river, beginning in September 2011. When the dams come out, reservoirs behind them will drain, exposing more than 800 acres of bottomland habitat important to elk and other animals.
