County mudslide warnings failed to reach hill’s residents

Michelle Braun on Friday inspects a large root system from an upturned tree on her property that fell about four years ago, possibly due to loose clay in the soil underneath, in the foothills of Mount Higgins. Braun’s house, off Swede Heaven Road near Darrington, sits on a steep hill with areas of loose clay and standing water above it. Since the Oso slide, she has been reaching out to local officials and geologists to investigate the likelihood of a similar event happening at her property.
